Decluttering Your Digital Drawer: A 15-Minute Stress Purge

Has your downloads folder become a museum of things you think you might need someday?

A 2026 Compass Datacenters survey found that 41% of US adults experience anxiety, stress, or frustration when managing digital storage. This week, give your digital junk drawer a manageable cleanup—without the need for an elaborate filing system.

Set aside 15 minutes and tackle three trouble spots:

  • Minutes 1–5: Clear the visual noise. Close tabs unrelated to your current task. Bookmark useful pages in one clearly named folder. Your browser doesn’t need to double as a to-do list.

  • Minutes 6–10: Rescue your Downloads folder. Delete obvious duplicates and obsolete screenshots. Move useful documents into project folders and give vague filenames a searchable name. “Final_FINAL_v7” has had its moment.

  • Minutes 11–15: Reduce the incoming pile. Unsubscribe from emails you consistently skip. Create a filter for routine updates and switch off nonessential app notifications while keeping work-critical alerts accessible.

Before you delete: Follow your employer’s file-retention rules, if there’s any, and see whether shared documents are still needed. Then schedule a five-minute weekly tidy as maintenance.
