GETTING AHEAD

How to advocate for yourself at work 📣

Standing up for yourself at work can be challenging. You might be overpowered by extroverts who don’t give you a second to talk in meetings, or just simply lack the confidence to fight your own corner.

That said, it’s essential to be your own cheerleader. Here are five ways to advocate for yourself at work:

Understand your position

A main part of being a strong advocate for yourself is understanding your position and what you bring to the table. Read over the description of your role, and make a note of what you do well.

List your goals ✍️

If you want to succeed in the workplace, you should have a list of goals created. By ticking off those goals, you’ll know that you’re working towards success, which, in turn, can help you talk about it to others.

Foster strong relationships 🧍

You won’t get anywhere at work unless you’re likable. Having a strong network in the workplace will allow others to advocate for you too.

Be assertive 💪

Remain poised when you encounter obstacles in the workplace, and be assertive when it comes to assigning tasks and giving instructions.

Be prepared for resistance ⛔

When you speak up for yourself, you’re going to have people that won’t agree or fight your corner. So, be prepared to receive some resistance.
