GETTING AHEAD 🚀

Race you to the bottom! 🏃

Falling down stairs

Many of us dream of advancing our careers, taking on more responsibilities, learning more things and increasing our earning potential. But in some cases, climbing the ranks is not what we had expected, forcing us to rethink our priorities and needs. 🤔

Indeed, climbing down the corporate ladder can become a necessity, just as much as progressing one’s career can. Some of the reasons this might happen include:

  • When you find yourself out of work. If you can’t find a position that’s the equivalent of your previous one in terms of seniority, you may have to take a step down.

  • When you want to change careers. When you have limited experience in your target industry, you may have to climb down a few steps to break into a different field.

  • When there is no room for growth. If you work at a small company, positions above you may be filled. You might need to rewind and switch employers, finding a place with greater room for growth. 🌱

  • When it no longer feels worth it. If you’re constantly stressed and your work–life balance is suffering, the perks of the job may no longer counteract the negatives.

Should you find yourself in any of the above situations, here are some ideas for how you can navigate it:

  • Trust yourself. Taking a step down the ladder may feel like you’re giving up something that took years to accomplish, but you must trust that your reasons are valid!

  • Try to negotiate a step-down. If you’re happy with your current employer, have an honest conversation with your manager and ask to take on a different role within the company.
