GETTING AHEAD 🚀

Is your employer “quiet cutting” you? ✂️

quiet cutting

According to Forbes.jobs recruiter Tom Caravela, “quiet cutting is a trendy term for ‘demotion’ but on a broader scale involving more than one employee.”

In essence, this (morally questionable) practice is a kind of restructuring strategy that allows companies to let people go, one after the other, without ever having to provide any compensation packages.

The tactic — which, unfortunately has become popular with employers — can cause team members to feel underchallenged and underappreciated, thus pushing them to resign. Employers, meanwhile, can happily shrink their teams as well as cut back on the associated costs of employing a large number of people. 💰

So, what’s an employee meant to do if they find themselves being “quietly cut”?

  1. Recognize it for what it is (an attempt at attrition) instead of doubting yourself. Doubting your worth will make it harder to confront your manager or apply for another job.

  2. Speak with your colleagues. If this is happening in your workplace, it will not just be affecting you. Raising your concerns together will be easier than doing it alone.

  3. Go over your employee handbook. See what the protocols are for promotions and raises to know what your rights are. 📝

  4. Speak to your manager or HR department. Discuss your future at the company, ask for feedback, and express an interest in being involved in more projects.

  5. Decide what’s best for your future. You could wait it out, not giving your employer the satisfaction of resigning, but what impact would a stagnant role have on your career progression? Keep your goals in the foreground.
