IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Valentine’s Day is a pain in the ❤️

help me love hearts

It’s a widely known fact that, due to the stressful nature of their job, the long hours and low pay, hospitality workers suffer some of the highest burnout rates compared to most other professionals.

And do you know what’s the one occasion that makes their lives harder? If you guessed Valentine’s Day, you're correct.

In an article, reporter Kerry Breen recalls what mid-January through to mid-February looked like for her and her colleagues at the Melting Pot — the fondue chain restaurant she worked at as a student. Specifically, she recalls working 10- to 12-hour shifts in a venue that normally welcomed 150 guests, yet, for the occasion, made room for 300. 😵

To accommodate for this, larger tables were divided up to sit two pairs of lovebirds instead of one. The couples would always be informed of this in advance, of course... Just to arrive at the restaurant and scream at the waiters, spit flying, for not getting them a private table — something that was not in their power to do, anyway.

Most of Breen’s teammates were balancing working two jobs, or juggling their shifts alongside school assignments and revision. 📚 So, it was on February 14th that Breen watched a colleague bend under the pressure, quit her job on the spot, and march out.

Breen’s word of advice to those celebrating Valentine’s Day? Try having a liiittle bit more empathy with your servers...

TODAY’S ADVICE

Fallen out of love with your career? Here’s how to fix it!

You bagged yourself your dream career, you were super excited to get started, but a few years down the line, it seems like you’ve lost that passion to go to work. 👎 If your job has slowly become monotonous, here are a few tips to break the cycle.

  • Write your thoughts down on paper. ✍️ The first step to identifying what you love and don’t love about your current situation is to write it down on paper. You might discover that you don’t like certain tasks, but the pros outweigh the cons.

  • Step outside of your comfort zone. 🚶This could mean a number of different things from taking on additional responsibilities, moving into another role, or searching for a job elsewhere. It might be that the organization isn’t a good fit, rather than the profession that you’re in.

  • Invest in your skills. ⚙️ Occasionally, to feel re-inspired, you need some form of education to get you going. So, if your workplace doesn’t provide seminars or courses, invest in one yourself where you can grow by learning something new

  • Set more goals. 🎯 What’s the best way to stay on track? By having an achievable goal to work towards. So, if you don’t have that, set yourself some goals which may help you stay motivated.
