IN THE SPOTLIGHT

5 steps to break into the tech industry 💻

tech jobs

Unlike some industries, like magazine publishing, which are declining, the global tech market is gaining momentum. For anyone looking to have excellent career growth prospects — and a bigger paycheck! — therefore, a career in tech might just be the most logical next step.

So, how do you break into this sector if you’ve got no previous experience? 🤔 Let’s look at five things you should prioritize and start working on to make your dream a reality.

  1. Expand your technical skill set. Depending on the role you want to land, commit to learning more skills, such as a programming language.

  2. Start networking with people in the field. Making connections with tech professionals will allow you to find out about job openings and potentially get in a good word for yourself.

  3. Explore potential certifications. If a part-time degree is out of the question, look for relevant online courses that lead to certification.

  4. Work with a mentor. This can be a friend who works at a tech company and can provide you with insights, or a career advisor who can guide you through the process of changing career paths.

  5. Volunteer your time at a tech company. 🏢 This can allow you to gain hands-on experience, make connections, and find out if working in this field is everything you envisioned.

As the market is very competitive, start as early as possible and stay committed through the ups and downs that come with attempting to change careers. The more effort you put into it, the sooner you can enjoy the fruits of your labor!

TODAY’S ADVICE

No, the tech industry isn’t dying 🧟

Although mass layoffs in the tech industry have dominated the news of late, the industry itself is far from fading. Some say it’s actually undergoing a dynamic evolution that challenges traditional notions.

These layoffs have nothing to do with the panic of AI coming after our jobs (it won’t). Rather, they’re the result of “binge-hiring” during the pandemic, high inflation and weak consumer demand. 📉

When you look at the numbers, too (over 460k people have lost their jobs between 2020 and 2023), the situation looks bleak. But it’s not all doom and gloom.

In fact, the tech industry added over 122k jobs in January alone — 46k of which were software developer and engineer positions. That’s an almost 24 % increase from December 2023, according to CompTIA’s latest Tech Jobs Report. 😮

Meanwhile, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects an average of over 377k tech job openings each year, while overall employment in the industry is projected to grow much faster than the national average for all occupations from 2022 to 2032.

So, no. The tech job market, and the industry itself, is not dying. In fact, it’s booming. So, we can only blame bad hiring practices 😠 for all the layoffs and the unnecessary panic surrounding a supposedly shortage of job opportunities.
