You have to ❤️ your job… Or do you?

Confucius once said: “Love what you do, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Well, for most of us, it doesn’t quite work out that way.

We have rent/mortgages to pay, bills to keep up with, kids to support, groceries to purchase and, in my case, cats to spoil. Our jobs are really just a means to an end.

Sure, if you love your job, that’s awesome! (You’re also one of the lucky few. Only about 20 per cent of Americans are actually “passionate” about their work.) But our jobs don’t really matter — they’re not meant to fulfill us or complete our lives. There’s more to life than work.

You don’t have to love your job. You just have to be a bad*ss at it.

The career you chose when you were 20/25/30 doesn’t have to be what you spend the rest of your life doing. As you navigate your career, you’ll learn additional skills that might lead you in a different direction. And that’s okay.

1. Make a list of your skillset. Before jumping ship, you need to think about the skills you already have. Once you’ve done that, think about the career you want to move to. Then, work out the skills you’ll need to be successful doing it.

2. Network, network, network. A great way to break into a new field is to network with the people already in it. Reach out to your existing contacts and start mingling.
