TALKING POINT

Layoffs and TikTok: A match made in heaven? 😇

Since early 2022, we have seen company after company (mainly in the tech sector) announce mass layoffs. Antrell Vining, who at the time worked for a major finance company, was just one of millions of people who found their job on the chopping block.

Antrell took to TikTok and uploaded a video telling his followers he “just got laid off”. He received hundreds of comments and messages of support. But that’s not all: he also received job referrals and networking opportunities. A month after his layoff, he had a new job — thanks to TikTok.

And Antrell isn’t the only one to have used social media to find a new job. Some have turned to Facebook, Twitter, Vine and LinkedIn.

Which begs the question: Has traditional job searching had its heyday? Is social media the new way to find work?

TOGETHER WITH UPSIDE

Don’t cut back, get cash back

The cost of eggs has risen 190.9 per cent since 2020. And with no sign of it stopping, we’re all trying to figure out where we can cut back a little bit.

That’s where Upside comes in. It’s a complementary app that gets you cash back on everyday items, like groceries, gas, and at restaurants. You get to go about your normal business while Upside earns a little bit of cash back here and there along the way.

Upside users earn 3x more cash back than other apps and rewards programs. On average, frequent users earn US340 a year.

Get an extra 25¢/gal cash back on your first tank of gas. Use code: BHCulture25.

TODAY’S ADVICE

WFH with pets: A survival guide 🐶🐱

As nice as it is to have our furry friends around us while we're working, they can also be a big distraction. Whether it's a kitty circling around your feet or a dog whining at the door to go out!

A few tips to keep them entertained while you crack on with work:

1. Make enrichment toys: Animals need entertainment so they don’t get bored. Making a lick mat or adding some catnip to their favorite toy can keep them entertained for a good hour.

2. Play with them on your break: Animals are a good stress reliever! Not only this, but you’ll also tire them out so they snooze while you’re working.

3. Create a scavenger hunt: Hide some of their favorite treats around the house and let them find them. Using their brain will tire them out too.

4. Make them a comfortable space: Try adding a comfy bed near your workspace, as they just want to be close to you (aww!). If they feel safe, they’re more likely to leave you be.

5. Play enrichment videos: If everything else fails, turn on the TV so they can watch some animal enrichment videos. Like this 8-hour video of birds.
