🥶 Amidst power cuts and more mass layoffs (thanks, Meta), we can say one thing… We’re sure glad it’s almost Friday. As always, we’re here to lighten the mood with some useful tips, funny stories, and a meme that’s fresh out of the CareerAddict “oven”. 👨‍🍳 Let’s jump right in!

In today's email:

  • 35-hour workweeks are out  Part-time jobs are in.

  • Interview mistakes: One candidate that did everything wrong.

TALKING POINT

alarm

35 hours a week? Nah, we’ll go for 25, thanks! 🤘

Recent stats have shown there’s been a surge in those choosing to work part-time instead of working 35+ hours a week. The main reasons being the lack of flexibility in a full-time role and the return-to-the-office war that’s raging, as remote jobs are dwindling.

Maybe you need a little additional time to take the kids to dance practice? Or do you need more hours in a day to care for an elderly family member? Whatever the reason, many people are taking the plunge and dropping their hours to better suit their lives — and reduce workplace burnout.

For many, though, there’s no choice — the cost of living means we’re forced to work too many hours to be able to pay our bills. And it kinda sucks.

If you could afford it, would you reduce your hours? Reply to this email and let us know!

TODAY'S ADVICE

😈 The interviewee from hell and what you can learn

elmo-fire

Our editor-in-chief Chris Leitch has interviewed many candidates for us over the years. One sticks out for him — for all the wrong reasons. He wants you to know the faux-pas that Mary (not her real name) made, so you can make the right impression at your next interview.

1. Arriving late. Making others wait 30 minutes for you shows that you don’t value their time. Aim to arrive 10–15 minutes before your scheduled interview. And if you know you’re going to be late, call ahead. That’s just common courtesy.

2. Wearing an inappropriate outfit. A crop top and a mini skirt might be okay for a night out, but not for an interview. No one will take you seriously. When choosing an interview outfit, ask yourself: “Is it appropriate for working in a professional environment?”

3. Taking a call. Unless the POTUS is calling you to thank you for saving the world from an asteroid, do 👏 not 👏 take calls during an interview. Put your mobile on silent, and keep it in your pocket or bag at all times.

4. Asking for an out-of-this-world salary. If you are going to ask for a high salary, make sure that you have the experience and qualifications to back up your demands. Always do your research into the average salary for similar roles based on your own background.

5. Saying you don’t need the job. Then why are you wasting the hiring manager’s time? No, no. Why are you wasting your time? All you accomplish here is come across as ignorant and arrogant. If you don’t really care about the job, then simply withdraw your application.

Did Mary get the job? She sure as hell didn’t!

FUN FACT

Did you know that people change jobs on average every 4.2 years? And that’s a good thing. Experts warn that if you’re not changing jobs every 3–5 years, you’re probably not doing enough to advance in your career.
