TALKING POINT

The global rust-out: Uninspiring workplaces are depressing folks

You’re probably wondering what “rust-out” means. So, let me explain. It’s basically when you feel uninspired at work and just wait for tasks to be assigned to you without much enthusiasm for what you’re doing. And while this feeling differs a lot from burnout, it can leave you feeling equally as depressed.

In a workplace culture where our success has been tied to personal output, being left to rust out feels like a personal failure. This, in turn, takes a toll on your personal life, too.

So, how do you get out of the rabbit hole of stagnation? Set new goals and make a change in your career. Seek work that feeds your soul!

 📝 MONDAY’S TO DO:

Try the Pomodoro method 🍅 For every 25 minutes you work, take a 5-minute break. Once you complete 4 consecutive “pomodoros”, take a longer break if needed. Working at timed intervals can boost productivity!

TODAY’S ADVICE

A doodle a day keeps the doctor away 🚫👨‍⚕️

Okay, so you’re no Picasso. But that shouldn’t stop you from doodling.

Why? Well, it enhances creativity, relieves stress and helps you relax. Plus, it improves memory recall and concentration. And it helps you be more productive.

Here are 3 tips to doodle your way to success at work:

1. Don’t overthink it. Just put pen or pencil to paper and let the creative juices flow. It’s about letting the motion be fluid. It could be a caricature or even a shape drawn around a random word.

2. Start with the basics. If you’re struggling to get in the zone of doodling, start with simple shapes like lines, waves and dots. And move on from there.

3. Don’t aim for perfection. The more you focus on “getting it right”, the more you miss the point of doodling. Just give it shapes, colors and symbols, and see what happens. Embrace those stick figures!
