TALKING POINT

Bare minimum Mondays (Don’t mind if we do!)

If you’re in your 20s (or have a kid who is) you must have heard of Bare Minimum Mondays. The trend, which Gen Z is smitten with, has taken social networks by storm. “But y tho?” in the words of a netizen.

💉 Well, the trend proposes a new antidote to hustle culture. Reserving Mondays for essential tasks can help beat the Sunday Scaries. That’s when your existence weeps at the thought of returning to work.

So, when Monday comes, start with the easiest tasks on your list. Schedule zero meetings. Work from your couch, even! Easing into the week could help you increase your overall productivity.

TODAY'S ADVICE

Negotiate the salary that makes you go “ka-ching!” 🤑

rich-kid

As a jobseeker, you’re a product. A product that you sell to potential employers. And like any product, you have a price. A value.

And you, naturally, want to make sure that you’re negotiating your services for the right fee.

How?

1. Do your research. Find out what the average salary is for the position you’re considering. When you know what others with similar experience and qualifications are making, you’ll have a better idea of what you should be earning. Salary comparison sites can be helpful here.

2. Determine a range. Always give a range, never a specific figure. This gives you some wiggle room to negotiate. But make sure you’re comfortable with accepting the low end of the range. And try to use a moderate or narrow range, typically between 5k and 10k.

3. Build your case. Don’t just mention the number you want. Explain why you feel you deserve it. Highlighting your strengths and giving concrete examples of how your skills and experience will benefit the company is the way to go.

4. Practice your delivery. Ask a trusted friend or relative to role-play with you. Using their honest feedback and constructive criticism, you’ll be able to master your pitch. And the more you practice, the more confident you’ll be for the real negotiation.

5. Don’t fixate on the amount. Companies usually have a set budget and might not be able to give you what you’re asking. But you can negotiate on other perks that have value, like PTO, gym memberships and 4-day workweeks.
