TALKING POINT

The rise of finfluencers: Can you trust them?

TikTok is full of finfluencers: so-called “financial experts”. And we end up falling prey to their advice. We try affiliate marketing and cashback apps, and other bogus ideas. But how easy is it to follow their tips?

As someone who has tested a few of them, it’s not as easy as they make it out to be. If you’re living from paycheck to paycheck, you have no disposable income to start saving away. So, while their advice sounds promising, finfluencers won’t solve your money struggles or financial debt.

Instead of taking their advice as gospel, try to take the tips that work for your lifestyle and income. Create your own plan when it comes to budgeting, paying off debt and earning more money 💰

Without initial financial backing, it’s difficult to climb the ladder and create investments, but it’s not impossible!

What do you think about finfluencers? Let us know by replying to this email.

TODAY’S ADVICE

🛑 Stop saying these annoying phrases…

We’re all guilty of uttering these five seemingly innocent phrases at work. But they’re annoying AF. And they could make you lose your manager’s respect — or, worse, your job. So, stop 👏 using 👏 them 👏

1. ASAP. It’s just vague. For you, it might mean the end of the week. But for your coworker or boss, it could be the end of the day. And this kind of miscommunication can create tension and delays. Instead, be specific: “Can we have this ready by 3pm today, please?”

2. I can’t. You never look good when you say this. It’s always best to explain why you can’t do something and provide a solution. For example: “I’d love to help but I’ve already got 3 other high-priority projects that I need to finish today. Is it possible to do this next week?”

3. Just checking in. Passive-aggressive, much? A better way to ask for an update is to do it directly: “Can I get an update?” Another, and perhaps more team-spirited, way of asking about a project’s progress is: “How is everything going?”

4. I’ll try. As Yoda famously put it: “Do. Or do not. There is no try.” When you say you’ll try something, it shows a lack of self-confidence. Instead, say something like: “I’ll ask for Sarah’s help, as I’m not sure about that part of the process. But yes, I’ll be happy to help with this.”

5. Keep me in the loop. This implies a lack of trust. Instead, discuss early on how frequently you’ll communicate with someone about a task or project. For example: “Please update me on Friday” or “Let’s have a weekly call on Monday morning”.
