TALKING POINT

Should Tim Cook’s sacrifice mean anything?

🍎 A bad apple spoils the bunch, goes the saying. The bigger the apple, the bigger the damage, too. In business, bad bosses can create a ripple effect that harms team morale. But what happens when CEOs lead by example?

Amidst stinging pay cuts and mass layoffs, Apple CEO Tim Cook placed his own earnings under the ax. The result? A 40 % loss of his total compensation as head honcho. That's mountains of dollars gone — and mountains still incoming.

On one hand, watching a leader plea for their own pay cut seems like a noble move. On the other, when said leader has a net worth of almost US 2bn, one can hardly shed a tear.

So, is Cook’s gesture inspiring enough to ignore Apple’s CEO-to-worker pay ratio? That’s currently 1,447 to 1. We’re on the fence about this one.

TODAY'S ADVICE

WTH is jobfishing? (And what to look out for)

jobfishing

You meet someone on a dating site and you “click”. Next thing you know, they’ve scammed you out of coin. That’s called catfishing.

Jobfishing is the career version of catfishing. You answer a job ad and you go to work. Without pay. And for a company that doesn’t exist. Yikes! 😨

So, what should you look out for in your job search to make sure you don’t ever fall victim to jobfishing?

1. It sounds too good to be true. Red flags should be raised if the ad promises things like unrealistic salaries and benefits.

2. The ad’s poorly written. No respectable company will let fly a job ad that’s riddled with typos. The same goes for email correspondence.

3. You’re pushed to accept the job. Hiring managers always allow potential employees at least a few days to review the proposal. They don’t force them to make a decision on the spot.

4. No one verifies your experience. No one —no one! — will hire you without reviewing your résumé and interviewing you first to make sure they’re hiring the right candidate.

5. They ask for personal details. Legitimate companies will just ever ask you for your account and SSN when you start the job or when they send you a formal contract.

6. You can’t find them online. This goes for both the company and the recruiter. If your research comes back empty or you can’t verify them, chances are it’s a scam.

SUCCESS STORY

How “niching down” helped Eman Ismail and her business

eman ismail photo

Introducing you to email strategist, copywriter and podcaster Eman Ismail. As the founder of Eman Copy Co, she helps online business owners and eCommerce brands increase their conversions.

💬 “I was originally running the communications dept of a small charity. The role was good, but it wasn’t working out, as I spent a lot of time commuting, meaning my 2-year-old was being picked up by the childminder as I was out of the house from 6am to 8pm.

I didn’t feel like I could be the present mother that I wanted to be. I wanted to be in a role where I could control more of my schedule to spend time with my son. And although I struggled with confidence and self-belief, I thought: ‘This is the time. This is the moment.’ So, I found the confidence (or maybe it was desperation) to go ahead and start my own business.

On August 31, I left my job, and by September 1, I was a business owner.

✍️ I started my business as a general copywriter. Basically, if anybody needed words, they would come to me. I very quickly realized that I was interested in the email side of things. I’d receive compliments on my emails to my subscribers, and I thought: ‘What if I wrote emails for my clients?’

Initially, I was really worried about specializing, as I felt as though I’d be narrowing my potential client base, but it was the opposite. This is really when my business really profited. Niching was the thing that helped me be more successful as people know what I do, who I help and how I help. In fact, recently, an email sequence I wrote helped a client exceed their target and gave them a US 170,000 course launch.

If I could give one bit of advice to those wanting to start their own business, it would be: You will never be ready to start your own business. Don’t wait for the right time. You’ll be waiting forever. The confidence that you’re looking for will come when you put yourself into being a business owner — when you’re making mistakes, when you’re learning lessons. The confidence comes after you take the leap.” 🥇
