TALKING POINT

The workplace as a pop culture fairytale

Thought you had done your fair share of job hopping? Listen to this. Since her debut in 1959, Barbie has worked 200 different careers. Inspirational? Certainly. Realistic? Probably not.

For a few decades, pop culture has been hellbent on portraying the workplace as one of three things:

✨ A wish-granting factory

💕 A terrific matchmaking platform

⚔️ A battleground designed for character growth

Work can result in both personal development and crushes. But we think it’s time the media we consume became more nuanced. And less out of touch.

What do you think? Do realistic depictions matter? Or should we let fictional characters carry on with their lives?

TODAY’S ADVICE

How to hit stop coworkers that rudely interrupt you

Have you ever been in the middle of explaining something or sharing an idea when that annoying coworker starts talking over you? Well, the bad(?) news is that you’re not alone. But the good news is that you can prevent them from doing it again.

Hint: It’s not punching their lights out. (No matter how satisfying that might be.)

Some tried-and-tested tactics to try out for yourself:

1. Raise your speaking volume 🔊

2. Use your body language. Raise the palm of your hand up in a friendly way.

3. Just keep talking. Don’t back down.

4. Suggest that people take turns speaking (especially in meetings).

5. Move to open your mouth and hold it open for a second.

6. Speak with authority and project confidence. This generally avoids unwanted interruptions.

7. Put the spotlight back on others who were cut off. They’ll return the favor.

8. Call them out. Be direct but diplomatic.

9. Address the whole group without pointing fingers (if you don’t feel comfortable doing #8).

10. Tie them up and make them listen to “It’s a Small World”. On repeat. 😈
