Body doubling: Does it really speed up work?

Stranger danger!

Well, not really. In the case of body doubling, strangers are actually welcome.

But what is body doubling? Essentially, it’s working with another person in the same room, a popular practice that many remote workers with ADHD have adopted. Even virtually, a body double’s presence can hold them accountable and improve their focus.

Although there hasn’t been any significant research to prove its effectiveness, it does seem to work. Workers with body doubles swear that they are getting more done. “I don’t know why it helps, but having another person involved in the process makes it so much more achievable,” writes one worker with ADHD.

And it makes sense. Most remote workers who previously worked on site say that their productivity is higher in the office than at home.

Sadly, layoffs are rampant as of late. Since January 2023, tech companies alone have let go an estimated 100,000 employees globally.

If a recent change in your company has affected you, the following steps could help you bounce back more quickly:

1. Don’t blame yourself. Companies will sometimes take dire measures to cut expenses. This doesn’t reflect on your ability or value.

2. Take time to process. Anger, sadness and fear are normal emotional responses to what’s happened. Allow yourself some time to grieve.

3. File for unemployment. This process takes time, so it’s best not to delay getting started.

4. Make a plan. Calculate how much you’ll be spending in coming months on rent, food and medical needs. Minimize other expenses as much as possible.

5. Turn to your network. Ask for recommendation letters, update your résumé, and share a post on LinkedIn. The ongoing talent shortages should work in your favor.
