Positive stress — and why you need it! 😩

stress

We often assign a negative connotation to the word “stress”. That’s because we’ve been told time and time again that stress is bad for us, capable of compromising our mental and physical wellbeing, including our heart health. ❤️‍🩹

However, so long as it’s contained to reasonable levels, stress can actually be a good thing. Recent research conducted by Forrester on behalf of Indeed showed that, when exposed to moderate amounts of stress, employees were 3 times more likely to stay focused on their tasks, feel motivated and accomplish more things in a short amount of time.

But positive stress isn’t just good for our careers; it can benefit the body and mind in more ways, too. For example, unlike chronic stress, positive stress stimulates the immune system! So, next time your supervisor adds yet another task to your to-do list, you might want to say “thanks” instead of rolling your eyes. 🙄 Just saying!

Power of positivity: Techniques to create a positive mindset

Let’s face it: being positive isn’t always easy. Self-criticism and negative thoughts always creep in (whether we like it or not), so as we’re approaching the new year, it’s time to rewire our brains 🧠 and start being a bit kinder to ourselves and others.

It’s not actually as hard as you’d imagine. With a few simple steps, you can be on the path to positive thinking.

Here are a few techniques to follow:

🙏 Practice gratitude: It’s important to reflect on the things that you’re grateful for. Something as simple as being grateful for warm weather or a good meal can help you focus on positive aspects of your life that will, in turn, increase your overall happiness.

⛔ Reframe negative thoughts: Instead of constantly putting yourself down or thinking the worst of a situation, flip your thought on its head and turn it into a learning curve or experience to grow and better yourself.

Surround yourself with positivity: If you’re constantly surrounded by a Negative Nancy, then you’re going to inherit the same attitude. So, be mindful of your close circle and keep it positive. Declutter your social media if that’s making you feel down, too.

🧘 Practice mindfulness: Observe your thoughts and emotions without judgment. Give yourself space to gain control over your emotions through deep breathing exercises and self-reflection.

🏆 Celebrate small wins: If you’re not going to be your own cheerleader, who will be? So, be proud of yourself and celebrate your successes — however small they are!

🤗 Be compassionate: Being understanding towards yourself and others is important. Everyone makes mistakes, and what is important is what we can learn from it and how we can grow to become more positive human beings.
