Does better clothing = better pay?

Have tech leaders 🧑‍💻 changed the way we dress for success?

Rewind 20 years, and all we saw was uniformed dress codes. CEOs were spotted in suits, while lower-ranking employees could be found in formal clothing (the more formal, the better).

But with the rise of tech billionaires came a new sense of fashion; you don’t see Mark Zuckerberg or Elon Musk strolling around in a suit and tie. So, this poses the question: does dressing for success still matter?

In some respects, yes! Research suggests that the way you dress can have a big impact on your career. In fact, you’ll be taken more seriously and have a better chance at salary negotiation if you dress for the role you want. So, there’s a reason that we’re coined with the term “power suit” to make you feel important in a workplace setting. 🕴️

With the switch to remote workplaces, perhaps what you wear isn’t as important as it once was. However, it doesn’t change the fact that we tend to dress the way that we feel. So, if you want to be in the most creative and productive mindset for work, put on your favorite top and make yourself feel good! ✨

Dressed to kill (it) 👠

If you have an important meeting coming up (it was about time to ask for that raise!) or an approaching job interview, you can absolutely kill it so long as you prepare, arrive early and dress the part.

Below are some outfit dos and don’ts that you might want to bear in mind when putting together your big-day getup. Though there certainly isn’t one right way to dress, the following can help ensure you make a positive first impression and feel as comfortable as possible during the interaction:

  • Plan ahead. If you’ve got a particularly flattering blazer that hangs somewhat crumpled in your wardrobe, take it to the dry-cleaners ahead of time.

  • Wear things that are comfortable. Sure, those loafers look good, but if you wince every time you take a step, the other person will notice — and interpret it however they want. 👞

  • Dial up the formality a notch. Just a notch! You want to look presentable and confident, not totally out of place.

  • Keep the accessories and fragrances to a minimum. They can be distracting and even make you appear unprofessional to some.

  • Mind the hairdo. No one is expecting to see a fresh, sleek, Zoe Kravitz-inspired pixie cut on you; but do make an effort to at least keep it neat. 💇‍♀️

  • Don’t try to be someone you’re not. You could look dashing in a pinstripe suit or a pencil skirt, but if that’s not really your thing, it’s okay. Stick with what feels right!

The more well-fitting and thought-out your outfit is, the more relaxed and confident you’ll feel. So, good luck on your big day!
