Is remote work the key to productivity? 🔑

The short answer is: it depends.

The long answer is that each team is as unique as the individuals it consists of. It follows, then, that what works for one group of people might not for another.

Perhaps that’s a big reason why research around remote work and productivity seems to arrive at such contradictory conclusions. You’ll find surveys suggesting it enhances employee engagement and ones that claim that the opposite is true.

What is generally agreed upon, however, is that professional happiness and fulfillment are directly related to productivity — and that they tend to be determined by the following, regardless of whether a person is working on a busy office floor or in a quiet living room:

  • A positive environment. 😌 Employers who trust their teams to do a good job without the need to micromanage tend to gain their employees’ trust back.

  • Fair remuneration. When you’re putting in the work but getting little in return, you’re likelier to throw in the towel or experience burnout.

  • Growth opportunities. Without them, employees begin to feel deflated, underappreciated and (put plainly) bored to tears.

  • Respect for downtime. 🔇 Frequent (and especially unpaid) overtime is a surefire way to break a team’s spirit.

While more and more companies instruct their workforce back to the office, certain industries (led by the tech sector) continue to embrace remote work. So, any employer who seeks to lead a happy, engaged team — remotely or not — should prioritize the things mentioned above!

How to manage a remote team effectively

Managing a remote team can be harder than an in-office team. Without that physical presence, it can be hard to build bonds, track work and discuss ideas.

With the aftereffect of COVID-19 lockdowns, however, most companies have mastered remote management. But if you’re still struggling, here are some top tips to follow:

  • Communication is key. 🗣️ There’s never too much communication when it comes to remote working. Don’t be afraid to schedule calls and catch-ups to connect with your employees. Consider using Slack and Google Hangouts for non-work related chat, too.

  • Be empathetic. Check in with remote employees to get a sense of their overall wellbeing. Make sure that they are comfortable with their work setup and provide some assistance or guidance if they feel overwhelmed.

  • Provide flexibility. The key to remote work wins is flexibility. Let your team know that they can vary their work hours to an extent. Just set some rules in place so it’s not abused. For example, if someone has gone to run an errand, the entire team should be notified or a change of status is required.

  • Make resources available. 📚 When working remotely, employees can often feel left behind without in-person training and conferences. So, it’s important to sign up to virtual events, schedule video training, and supply plenty of resources to help remote employees learn and improve their skills.

  • Show trust. Trust is crucial when it comes to working remotely. As long as employees are performing their work to a high standard and meeting deadlines, there’s no need to start tracking their computers. A little trust can go a long way when it comes to productivity in the workplace!
