What to do when two (or more) companies want you

Smack in the middle of October! 🎃 On our list this Monday morning:

THE BIG IDEA

Sick of your 9 to 5? Rent out goats for a living!

goat winking

You’ve heard of people renting things like suits, costumes, cars, bicycles, even bouncy castles. But have you ever come across goat rentals — or should we say goat hiring, since it’s living, breathing creatures we’re talking about and not objects? 🐐

No? Well, we’ll have you know that goat hiring exists, and it’s just what it sounds like. Rather than renting equipment and workers to keep your property nice and tidy, you can hire a herd of goats to graze on whatever overgrown vegetation you’ve got.

If you’re wondering how it works, it’s simple (not to mention genius and good for the environment). Their owner will typically bring the goats to you, place a temporary fence around them and let them do their thing. “We are using goats as they go where people can’t,” says William Walsh, owner and shepherd of 23 goats. 🌿

As far as strange business ideas go, this one’s currently our favorite. What other strange professions have you come across that you could see yourself doing?

TODAY’S ADVICE

Eeny, meeny, miny, moe, catch a job by its toe! 🤔

Receiving a job offer is no easy feat. You need to write a tailored résumé and a targeted cover letter, attend an interview or two, and possibly take a test — while competing with about 250 other applicants.

But what happens when you receive not one but two (or more) job propositions from different companies? How do you choose which one to accept?

  • Forget about salary (for a minute). Consider what other factors are important to you (like location and professional growth), and how each company delivers on these.

  • Research the companies. Read about their values, and determine how these align with your own. Also read the news and pay special attention to any controversies.

  • Learn about company culture. Sites like Glassdoor and Fairygodboss can be immensely helpful, as they publish employee reviews.

  • Make a list. Nothing beats a good old-fashioned pros/cons list, which help simplify the decision-making process.

WHAT WE’RE LISTENING TO

Working on a beach in Bali 🌴

If you could do your job from anywhere in the world, like a beach in Bali, do you think it would increase your job fulfillment? We would have said “yes” too — to HR leader Sarah Aviram’s dismay. Although hybrid work can be desirable, there are many things it can’t fix. Instead, she shares better ways to thrive in the workplace, even if that’s a regular office and not an idyllic location.
