OPINION

Not everyone has to have a dream job

different shoes

From a young age, people love to ask us what we’d like to be when we grow up. Not what job we’d like to have, but what we’d like to be — which establishes the idea early on that what we do for a living is the same as who we are.

And while some people have a pretty clear and fixed answer for where their true passion lies, many don’t see themselves doing one thing forever — or having a single, unchanging purpose to pursue on this planet. 🌏

The truth is that defining yourself solely based on what you do for a living is dangerous; losing your job or making a big mistake at work can make you feel like a total failure of a person. A rigid view of yourself can also lead to an aversion to growing, reconsidering and redefining who you are and what makes you happy. And this can cause you to stay in situations long after you’ve outgrown them. 😔

TODAY’S ADVICE

Is your résumé too long?

When it comes to résumés, size does indeed matter. If it’s too long, hiring managers might be deterred from reading it. 🥱

As a general rule of thumb, keep your résumé to 1–2 pages in length. That said, if you have sufficient — and relevant — experience to go over two pages (particularly if you work in STEM), that’s fine; in fact, 10-page résumés aren’t uncommon for academic professionals.

If you’re struggling to keep your résumé to two pages, though, try these tips:

  • Omit personal pronouns like “I” and “my”.

  • Reduce the page margins to 0.5″.

  • Delete irrelevant jobs and other information.

  • Use bullet points — between three and six for each job.

  • Shorten your summary to a maximum of five lines.

  • List useful contact information, and keep everything on one line.

  • Decrease font sizes to 10–12 pts, except your name which should be a little larger.
