THE BIG IDEA

Living big in the desert 🌵

Back in 2015, Sara and Richard Combs (who are currently in their mid-to-late 30s) quit their jobs to start their own hospitality business, The Joshua Tree House. Browsing for properties a few years later, in 2018, Richard came across an abandoned inn in Tucson, AZ. The property sat on 38 acres of empty canyon and had not been touched in 10 years. 🏜️

Through borrowing from family and friends as well as a small-business lender, the couple were able to secure the inn and arrange the renovations necessary for the place to come alive once more.

As of 2023, the rooms are available for $ 200–600 a night. Alternatively, guests can book the entire 7-bedroom inn starting at $ 2,200 a night. The property features a hot tub in the style of a hot spring, an olive grove, a canyon pool, a walking trail and a fire pit. Dreamy, no? 🌙

So, what say you? Would you quit your job to start your own business? Reply and let us know.

📝 FRIDAY’S TO DO:

Implement the 2-minute rule ⏱️ If a task can be completed in 2 minutes, do it right away. If it will take longer, schedule it for later. This helps you create a clear process for how you prioritize your tasks and reduces the risk of wasting time.

TODAY’S ADVICE

The power of giving back

Volunteering isn’t just for students who want to pad their résumé; it’s for everyone at every stage in their careers. Whether it’s offering pro bono services or volunteering at your local animal shelter or designing a website for a charity, you’ll benefit in several ways — including:

🎨 You develop your skill set. This includes public speaking, communication, teamwork, leadership and general social skills.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 You broaden your network. You meet people who share similar interests, allowing you to make friends or useful industry connections.

💼 You become more employable. It shows future (and current) employers that you’re driven, and it can be a good way to enter a field you’re volunteering in.

🤔 You learn more about yourself. Volunteering can be an awesome way to discover what interests and motivates you, and what gives you a sense of purpose and joy.

ASK AN EXPERT

How to be happy again 😊

Got a question about your career, job search or résumé? Our experts have the answers!

This week, Maria D from Seattle, WA asks:

💭 I’m unhappy at work. What should I do?

Firstly, you need to determine if you’re just in a slump that will pass over time (everyone’s been there!) or if you’re truly in a situation that you can’t see ending. Then, start thinking about what needs to change to make you happy — be it reducing your workload, requesting additional responsibilities or changing jobs altogether — and how you can go about making these changes. If it’s your line of work that makes you unhappy, then you might even want to consider changing careers — our career test over at CareerHunter can point you into the right direction!
