Acting (too) professional can harm your career

Taking your work seriously and striving to stay on the good side of your manager and coworkers is by no means an unreasonable thing to do. But what happens when your need to look professional overrides another element that’s fundamental to advancing your career — your humanity, that is?

People start being unable to relate to you. 😕 While staying collected is desirable in the office, never expressing enthusiasm, disagreement or worry can make it difficult for people to trust you.

You up your chances of experiencing burnout. 😪 Not using up your PTO or sick days will result in mental and physical fatigue piling up.

It becomes harder to learn. 🧠 Do you nod instead of admitting that you don’t know something? Are you scared to ask for a second opinion? When you’re reluctant to ask for feedback in case you “look bad”, it's harder to grow.

The mistakes hindering your job search

Looking for job opportunities can be a long-winded process, especially if you’re guilty of (accidentally) making some seriously bad mistakes that will merely set you back to square one, like these:

📄 Sending a generic résumé. Make sure you tailor your résumé to the specific job you’re applying for, and that it incorporates relevant keywords.

✉️ Foregoing the cover letter. You should solely omit this from your application if you’re specifically asked not to send one — which is rare.

💻 Maintaining an unprofessional social presence. Employers will screen your Facebook and LinkedIn profiles, so make sure they present you as a capable professional.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Not using your network. Friends, relatives and colleagues can be an awesome source of job opportunities, as they may be aware of something right up your alley.

❓ Not asking questions. When you ask relevant, interesting questions, you’ll impress your interviewers. Remember: interviews are a two-way conversation.
