THE BIG IDEA

The richest sandwich maker out there 🥪

shining sandwich

Derrick Hayes is a 36-year-old entrepreneur and self-described dreamer who grew up in West Philadelphia. As a young man, he learned about cooking from his grandfather, who was a big lover of food.

Carrying that legacy, Derrick started Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks, which he named after his late father. Derrick struggled to keep the business afloat until rapper and actress Eve miraculously stopped by for a sandwich. “I’m cooking this chicken cheesesteak like my life depended on it,” he recalls — and it worked. Eve spread the word about Big Dave’s on her social media channels.

In his first year, Derrick made less than $ 100k. In the last 12 months, however, his Atlanta restaurant brought in more than $ 2.3m. With a bit of faith, a bit of luck, and a lot of hard work, dreams do come true.

TODAY’S ADVICE

Say “no” to dwelling on your mistakes

Everyone makes mistakes — both in our professional and our work lives. It’s just part of the human condition.

But most of us will fixate and obsess over those mistakes, sometimes even the tiniest ones. We beat ourselves up, scolding ourselves that we could’ve done it differently or avoided it altogether. 🤔

While that might be true, dwelling on our mistakes can do more harm than good: it keeps us in a perpetual state of experiencing life’s negatives, and this can lead to negative effects on our physical and mental health.

So, quit dwelling. Acknowledge you made a mistake, fix it if you can, apologize, learn from it, and move on!
