💡 QUOTE OF THE DAY: “I choose to make the rest of my life the best of my life.” — Louise Hay, American author

THE BIG IDEA

Goodbye Apple, hello BBQ! 🍔

Would you give up a job at Apple to start your own restaurant without any experience whatsoever? New Yorker Dan Defossey did. Back in 2013, he and his friend Roberto Luna decided to start a BBQ restaurant in Mexico City, where they worked, as there was no equivalent around.

At first, as Dan recalls, the food was no good — not even the neighborhood dogs would finish it up. And the locals weren’t familiar with what was being served, so the duo was making around $30 a day. However, with a bit of humor (naming the restaurant “Pinche Gringo”, meaning “Darn American”) and a lot of practice, the business eventually became a hit.

What started in an Airstream trailer has since expanded to a chain of seven restaurants, including a converted warehouse that can fit up to 2k people. Pinche Gringo has a team of more than 100 employees and, in 2022, their revenue was $9m.

Would you ever take a leap of faith like Dan did? Reply and let us know.

TODAY’S ADVICE

AI for job search wins! 🤖

You’ve probably heard of students getting (ahem) a little help from ChatGPT to write their essays. Likewise, more and more jobseekers are using AI to improve their chances of landing a job they love. If you’ve not tried it yet, this is how it can help you:

✍️ It can improve your cover letter. Do add your own touch and proofread everything, however! AI is still prone to “hallucination”, or making up facts.

🙋 It can prepare introductory, follow-up and thank-you emails. No need to rack your brain to find the ideal words to say. Introduce yourself to your bot pal, and let it craft the right sentences.

📝 It can create impactful “about me”s for your socials. As always, go over everything before you post, as your machine pal might give you a qualification or two you don’t actually have.

ASK AN EXPERT

Résumé hobbies: Yay or nay?

Got a question about your job, career or job search? Our experts can help!

Jenny O from Canada asked:

💬 Should I include hobbies in my résumé?

Yes! But specifically in the following cases: you have inadequate or no work experience, your hobbies demonstrate transferable skills, or you’re specifically requested to include them.

If you decide to list your hobbies in your résumé, make sure that you have the room for them. And list them in a separate section at the end of your résumé. It’s also a good idea to write a short descriptive sentence for each hobby.

Most importantly: steer clear of questionable and controversial interests, including religious and political affiliations.
