THE BIG IDEA

Psychology student turned master distiller

🥃 There are no formal qualifications for becoming a master distiller. For Elizabeth McCall, three things paved the way. These were curiosity, passion, and a masters in counseling and psychology.

In February, 2023, McCall became the third master distiller of Woodford Reserve distillery. She also became the first female master distiller in the brand’s history. It was a story made possible by years of experience. But it was also about McCall’s ability to leverage her background in her favor.

McCall started working for parent company Brown-Forman in 2009 as a sensory technician. She realized then the practical value of her background in counseling and psychology 💡. McCall applied statistical analysis and methodology of individual responses to product control. And she excelled at it. By 2015, McCall became a master tester. By 2018, an assistant master distiller.

Her advice: if you’ve got a passion for something, then go for it. Don’t wait until you’ve got the knowledge and answers you think you need.

📝 MONDAY’S TO DO:

Go for a morning run 🏃 Running doesn’t just release those feel-good hormones that we keep hearing about, but doing so before work also helps you wake up your body and create a sense of momentum for the day. (Just be sure to shower before work.)

TODAY’S ADVICE

Schedule time for your hobbies

⚖️ Work–life balance. Three words. Lots of benefits. Unfortunately, our lives aren’t split between work and hobbies alone. Other priorities, including family, socializing and leisure, draw from our available time. This often means that hobbies take a back seat to the rest.

But there are reasons why you should prioritize hobbies:

  1. They help structure your day

  2. They foster social connections

  3. They relieve stress

  4. They make you interesting

  5. They promote flow (the feeling of losing track of time)

  6. Their benefits can spill into other areas

Don’t resort to the default cycle of work-leisure-work. Instead, make time for your hobbies. You might realize it’s the thing you need to break up the monotony of the day!
