First Monday of the month! 🌞 Let’s start August with:

  • Side hustles: Even Olympians have them.

  • Overcommitting: Say no to saying yes to everything.

  • Movies against Monday blues: Our picks.

THE BIG IDEA

Engineering a side hustle… As an Olympic swimmer 🏊

swimming

For most of the year, 30-year-old Nic Fink, an Atlanta resident, works as an engineer. More specifically, he has a 9-to-5 job as an assistant project manager for a utilities company in the city.

But beyond his primary job, Fink is also an Olympic swimmer! He has held his job at Quanta since March, but his pool-based side hustle goes back a few years. It can pay well, too, bringing him $ 47,500 in December 2022!

In 2020, Fink competed at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo. He even secured fifth place in the 200m breaststroke. On June 30, 2023, he finished 1st place in the US Swimming Championships. He posted the second-fastest time in the world for the men’s 100m breaststroke in the process.

Juggling engineering and Olympic swimming is no easy task. Lucky for Fink, his coworkers are supportive. When he retires from Olympic swimming, at least he’ll have an engineering career to fall back on!

TODAY’S ADVICE

Hit the brakes on overcommitting

It’s natural to want to please everyone who comes your way. Work is no exception, since your livelihood often depends on how good we are at what we do. But while you might think the answer is to say “yes” to everything that comes your way, think again. Overcommitting can actually prevent you from excelling at work.

🤨 How exactly?

  1. Quality of work will decrease in favor of an increase in quantity.

  2. Overcommitting raises the chances of burnout.

  3. Activity is prioritized at the expense of productivity.

✔️ Instead of overcommitting, do the following:

  1. Make “no” your default setting.

  2. Prioritize your mental and physical wellbeing.

  3. Carefully plan what to invest your time on.

One of our favorite ways to unwind after a long day at work is by going to the movies. Lucky for us, this summer has seen one entertaining release after another: Barbie (don’t judge), Oppenheimer, Mission: Impossible 7, Indiana Jones 5, Elemental… We love all genres equally and enjoyed every one! 📽️

What’s been your favorite movie this summer? Reply to this email and let us know.
