THE BIG IDEA
The $ 2m rental business
Until recently, Jamie Inlow worked at the University of Virginia as a consultant and student program director. But then something interesting happened: her neighbor gave her $ 2k to furnish an empty apartment he owned, which she then listed on Airbnb… And thus began her property management adventure. 🏘
Despite having no business or real estate experience, Inlow knew she wanted to turn this side gig into a full-time affair. She created a website and Instagram account — Be Still Getaways — and worked with a local influencer to spread the word. She convinced her neighbor to invest in another property and split the takings with her. At the time, she was juggling this with her old job and working 80-hour weeks, often with her toddler strapped to her chest.
🎯 Having onboarded more people and left her old role, Inlow currently manages over 100 rentals in Virginia. Last year, the company brought in $ 2.3m. In her words, it was her resilience and ambitiousness that enabled her to do this.

TODAY’S ADVICE
Proactivity is key in your job search
You’ve probably heard that it’s important to be proactive in your job search. It’s excellent advice. The issue is that most people think being proactive = scrolling job boards until something grabs them. That’s called being reactive.
These are the main differences between the two:
🐌 Reactivity
Passively looking for a position
Applying exclusively when you come across a job that interests you
Applying exclusively to positions on job boards and company websites
🎬 Proactivity
Targeting employers you want to work for
Scouting opportunities before they go public (accessing the hidden job market)
Networking online or offline
Being proactive means actively finding/making opportunities, saving time and reducing the risk of getting lost in a sea of applicants. So, end the cycle of reactivity, and start being proactive in your job search!
