OPINION

Nobody asked for your “fun” company retreat!

company retreat form

Some companies are trying to end remote work by enforcing strict return-to-office policies. Others have adopted remote-first policies. In either direction, employers face the same concern: how can they reduce turnover and make employees feel like they’re part of a team? 🚪

One answer is to bring back soul-crushing company retreats.

There are definite pros and cons to WFH. But these company retreats are merely concerned with the cons. Namely that it’s easy to feel isolated due to a lack of face time with coworkers. But the downsides of company retreats can outweigh the benefits. This is why:

  • They blur the lines between work and personal spheres.

  • They’re uncomfortable, filled with brainstorming ideas, productivity-based tasks and icebreakers.

  • They’re often an extension of work.

  • You’re stuck with your coworkers 24/7.

💡 Here’s an idea: don’t go throwing funds at bottom-shelf wine and awkward sleeping arrangements at a weekend retreat nobody asked for. Instead, try asking employees what they need to feel connected — and not what you think they need.

TODAY’S ADVICE

Tips for brain gains 🧠

Do you ever look at people and think: “Wow, I wish I were that smart”? Although we often view intelligence as a fixed characteristic, it’s in fact divided into different types that can be enhanced through targeted training. Let’s look at some ways you can reconnect with your inner thinker:

📖 Read more books. You’ll gain knowledge, enrich your vocabulary, and boost your focus and attention span at once.

🏋 Train your memory. Crosswords, card- and word-recall games, Sudoku, jigsaw puzzles… They’ll help keep your brain sharp and young.

🤔 Consider views different to yours. Less time on TikTok, more time thinking about things. Be sure to explore multiple sides to your topic of choice, as that encourages flexibility of thought.

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING

Change the world (by becoming a domino)

Luvvie Ajayi Jones stresses the importance of becoming a domino: a person who isn’t afraid to fall first so that others may follow. Her message: comfort is overrated. She believes that when we let fear dictate what we do, it stops us from achieving our purpose and making the world a better place.
