THE BIG IDEA

100 years old and working 4 days a week

flying super granny

Jayne Burns works part-time as a fabric cutter. She commutes 20 minutes every day from her house in Cincinnati, OH to nearby Mason for work. Though this might sound like an ordinary story, there’s one extraordinary part of it. Jayne is 100 years old!

She started working at Joann Fabric a few months after the passing of her husband in 1997. That means she started her job in her mid-70s! Jayne secured her job at her daughter Donna’s recommendation. Since then, she has been crushing it at work for the past 26 years!

Retirement wasn’t for her. She tried it a few times in her 70s and 80s but would always return a few months later. Why? Because she missed the routine (and the friendships). It’s why she believes a good job is an essential part of fulfillment.

After 100 years and multiple careers, Jayne has one piece of career wisdom: positive relationships are what make a job enjoyable.

What are your thoughts on Jayne’s story? Reply and let us know!

📝 FRIDAY’S TO DO:

Change your work commute 🚌 Take a different route or use a different mode of transport (after some careful planning). Even if it’s just for the day. This will take out the monotony of your day.

TODAY’S ADVICE

Breaking the ice — naturally 🧊

In the spirit of Talk-in-an-Elevator Day, we wanted to share some tips on breaking the ice with your coworkers! Whether you just started a job or want to make another BFF at work, this is how you can approach your colleagues:

😌 Work on your positivity. An optimistic attitude (especially at work, where many tend to sulk) can be very inviting.

🍜 Eat in the breakroom. Eating at your desk with your headphones on doesn’t exactly scream “I’m approachable!”

💭 Be present. When in conversation, listen actively instead of letting your mind wander. Developing your cultural awareness can also put others at ease!
