Pay transparency: it’s mutually beneficial

The debate over pay transparency has become one of the biggest HR topics of 2023. Governments around the world are adopting measures to make employers publish salaries. In short, while the burden of proof of pay discrimination used to rest on the employee, it seems the tide has turned.

As of April, the European Council adopted a set of rules on pay transparency. In Singapore, companies will have to disclose exact payout and salary amounts for CEOs and directors. In the US, New York, California, Illinois and Colorado have passed laws enforcing pay transparency.

For permanent contract employees, it’s a big step in the right direction. It will reduce the chances of being underpaid and undervalued. Employers might be hesitant at first, but they can also see the benefits of pay transparency, like:

• Attracting more talent

• Streamlining recruitment

• Improving employee retention

• Increasing fairness

• Bolstering brand image
