THE BIG IDEA

Lessons from a former people walker

walk sign

What comes to mind when you hear the words “conventional career path”? Architects, accountants and teachers, presumably. Although these jobs are taken up by countless people around the world, there are still individuals who choose to tread less frequented paths or carve out entirely new ones. Such as Chuck McCarthy, for example, who refers to himself as a TEDx alumnus, prolific artist, serial entrepreneur and children’s book writer… And who also happens to be a former people walker. 🚶

Up until the recent pandemic and the arrival of his son, McCarthy was walking people (strolling alongside them, that is) for a living, charging $ 7 per mile! As expected, some found the idea silly. But, if you ask us, earning a living by combining exercise and companionship — both of which are vital to our wellbeing — is ingenious. 👏

If we can learn something from people like McCarthy, it’s that being successful doesn’t always translate into a fancy job title and an enviable salary. For some, it’s about doing something meaningful or out of the ordinary.

TODAY’S ADVICE

Confidence at work: it’s learned

Confidence isn’t an inherent trait. It’s something you can learn. It’s also something you need to have job satisfaction.

Below are three tips on how to build confidence at work:

  1. Know yourself. Self-knowledge is one of the most important soft skills. It’s also what helps you understand the unique values you provide.

  2. Take small steps. Big gestures can lead to big disappointments. Set goals and find confidence-building tasks that are achievable.

  3. Focus on your achievements. When you lack confidence, it’s easy to focus on where you’ve gone wrong. Instead, focus on the areas where you’ve been successful in.

Threads: The Twitter killer?

Threads app

via MobileSyrup

By July 10, Meta’s Threads made history. It became the fastest growing app in history, and the quickest app to reach 100m users. With its quick rise has come a significant hit to Twitter’s usage, much to the irritation of Elon Musk.

Some stats at a glance:

  • 20m sign-ups within 12 hours

  • 30m sign-ups within 24 hours

  • 70m sign-ups in less than 48 hours

  • 90m sign-ups within 4 days

What are your thoughts on Threads? Do you think it will make Twitter obsolete?
