THE BIG IDEA

Putting the $ in Pilate$

Pilates

Would you pour your entire savings into a startup idea with the risk of losing it down to the last penny? That’s what Anne Mahlum did — and, despite the odds, it couldn’t have worked out better.

The story began in 2013, when Mahlum took her first Pilates class and fell in love with it. In her own words, “I never saw my body respond to a workout like this.” Having had her relationship to fitness revolutionized by the exercises, she decided to launch her own Pilates business. 🤸

Within a few months, Mahlum had used her savings — amounting to $ 175k — to start Solidcore, a full-body, Pilates-inspired reformer. Her previous experience in branding, fitness and community-building allowed her to make her vision reality.

A decade later, Solidcore opened its 100th location… And Mahlum has sold her shares for $ 88.4m. How’s that for risk-taking? 😱

So, what do you think? Could you do it? Reply to this email and let us know.

TODAY’S ADVICE

Stop rage applying to jobs 🛑

Underappreciated, underpaid and overworked. These are some reasons why employees quit their jobs. If you’ve felt that way, you might be tempted to rage apply for every job that looks relevant. Truth is: the sole person this hurts is you.

So before you go for gold in the rage applying Olympics and start drafting an aggressive resignation letter, take a deep breath and do the following:

  1. Communicate your needs. Discuss your concerns with your employer (they may not know you feel the way you do).

  2. Prioritize your needs. Don’t hunt for any job. Hunt for the one that matches your needs.

  3. Reach out to your network. They can help you put a foot in the door at their company.

  4. Tailor your résumé. This displays genuine interest and enthusiasm for the role.
