THE BIG IDEA

Inventionland: where productivity and innovation go to play

Inventionland reel

You’ve probably dreamed of a place where imagination, innovation and work go hand in hand. Enter Inventionland: a 60,000ft2 facility in Pittsburgh, PA. The site exists to promote innovation, foster creativity and advance education.

Every year, Inventionland hosts 15k people. These range from students, educators and designers to professionals and inventors. Its mission: to cultivate a worksite that inspires childlike wonder. And how does it do that? With 16 themed sets of workspaces. The result? An idea incubator without equal.

The 16 sites have different themes according to their intended use. These include a pirate ship, where games and high-tech products are designed, and a nursery with the “world’s largest crib”. Inventionland also hosts a motor speedway, Inventalot Castle, a treehouse, and a cavern with a cascading waterfall. If Inventionland taught as anything, it’s that work and play can co-exist!

TODAY’S ADVICE

Resubmitting your résumé

Hello… It’s me (again). Give me a job. 🎵

So, the time has come to resubmit your résumé to a company that rejected or ghosted you in the past. Though it can seem awkward, it would be a shame to pass up new opportunities due to past experiences. This is how you should do it:

  • Submit a different résumé. Your previous one clearly didn’t cut it. Making a few alterations is, therefore, a good idea to better highlight your strong points.

  • Wait. Even if you want to apply for a different position, you should wait at least 6 months before doing so. Think of how you can enhance your application materials in the meantime.

  • Don't mention your previous application unless they ask. If they do remember you, focus on explaining why you’d be a good fit this time around.
