Return-to-office wars: they’re about productivity (and control)

office war gif

The return-to-office wars rage on with little sign of stopping. Amazon recently rejected a petition to end the company’s RTO mandate. That petition was signed by nearly 30k workers. As of March, Apple threatened punishment for employees who fail to show up to the office at least 3 times a week. That same month, Elon Musk emailed Twitter staff at 2:30am to tell them that “the office is not optional”.

Why are companies demanding that workers return to the office? Is it because staff are less productive? Or do executives need a way to keep justifying half-emptied worksites? The RTO wars point to the willingness of large employers to downplay goal-oriented productivity. They’re focusing instead on clock-ins and fabricated workplace culture.

At the heart of it is an obvious proximity bias. Companies are fighting to maintain an outdated idea. Namely, the idea that productivity is an 8-hour day under a manager’s constant gaze.

Before demanding a rigid return mandate, companies should explain how they define productivity. Otherwise, they should admit they aren’t interested in the needs of their employees.

📝 WEDNESDAY’S TO DO:

Step away from your desk for lunch 🍔 Working through your break will do you or your productivity no good. Instead, head over to the break room or even out to the local coffee shop.

TODAY’S ADVICE

Train for a stronger work ethic 🏋️

Some people have such a strong work ethic that it shows in everything they do — from the way they stroll through the door to how they go about completing their tasks. So, how do they do it?

🧘 Introspection. Identifying what’s important to you and setting clear goals for yourself allows you to find meaning in your work.

🤔 Doing one thing at a time. When you’re working on one thing, work on one thing. When you’re taking a break, take a break.

📂 Organization. Having a clear to-do list for your day and week lets you prioritize more efficiently. This saves you time — and panic.

🧠 Emotional intelligence. The more you develop it, the better you can handle stress and irritating colleagues, and the better you can focus on your job.
