Stress addiction: 3 signs you might have it

stress carrying

There are constant reminders of the effects of stress in the media, the workplace, and in our reactions to our environment. But have you ever stopped to think that you’re creating stress because you’re addicted to it? It seems like a ridiculous question, but there’s scientific evidence to show that stress addiction is a distinct phenomenon.

It works like this: stress releases cortisol and dopamine. Dopamine, the “pathway to pleasure”, thrives on reinforcement. When we’re stressed, it reinforces the idea that stress is good for us, since it fills us with dopamine. So, even though we can admit that chronic stress is linked to health problems like PTSD and tension headaches, we may still actively look for it as a mood booster. It’s a vicious cycle:

  • Our bodies like the way dopamine feels.

  • Stress releases dopamine.

  • Our bodies look for ways to create stress as a source of dopamine.

Harvard-trained psychologist Debbie Sorensen lists three signs you might be addicted to stress:

  1. You don’t rest or relax.

  2. You constantly look at your smartphone.

  3. You say “yes” to everything.

TODAY’S ADVICE

Is it time to ask for a raise? 💰

Asking for a raise can be stressful! But it’s an important step in professional growth and fighting what you're worth. Below are some reasons why you should ask for a raise:

  • Your salary doesn’t match inflation.

  • You’ve taken on more responsibilities.

  • You were offered better pay at another company.

  • The company is growing (and you can prove you helped it grow).

  • Your salary doesn’t match your colleagues’ salaries.

If any of these apply to you, then it might be time to ask for a raise!
