Upwork to uptown, professionalism vibes, pro development, and more…
TOGETHER WITH
To another successful week! 🏆 Let’s start it with:
From Upwork to uptown: Making bucks making PowerPoints.
Career development: Three worthwhile approaches.
Professionalism: It’s a vibe.
💡 QUOTE OF THE DAY: “There are three ways to ultimate success: The first way is to be kind. The second way is to be kind. The third way is to be kind.” — Fred Rogers, American TV host, author and producer
THE BIG IDEA
This millennial made $ 2m using PowerPoint
Graphic designer Courtney Allen recently became a millionaire. On Upwork. Using PowerPoint. Yep, it’s true! So, this is how it happened. When Allen graduated from university back in 2012, she knew she had a passion for presentation design but wasn’t quite sure how to turn it into a business.
For a while, she worked contract positions as a PowerPoint presentation designer for various companies. Then, in 2015, she set up a profile on Upwork and started applying for as many gigs as possible. Without reviews, it was tough at first — but Allen pushed through. And surely enough, she started booking more and more clients in time. Even the likes of Yelp and Adobe.
Finally, in 2017, she launched her own presentation-making company, 16X9. Combined with her Upwork contracts, her gigs have recently brought in more than $ 2m.

TODAY’S ADVICE
Look and feel more professional
Adopting more professional behaviors at work has its benefits. It can inspire more trust from your colleagues, gain your manager’s approval and have your opinions taken seriously. Below are some tips on achieving this:
⏰ Arrive at places on time. Whether that’s getting to work in the morning or joining a meeting, aim to arrive a few minutes in advance.
💻 Commit to working methodically. It’s good to take breaks regularly, but don't mix work with breaktime. Set clear boundaries.
😌 Work on your emotional intelligence. It will make handling stress and conflict easier, and help you communicate more effectively with your team.
💁♀️ Mind your appearance. Looks aren’t everything, but a clean outfit and neat hairdo will work in your favor.
