THE BIG IDEA

Turning drain water into beer (You read that right!)

Research conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency shows that the need to conserve water is hitting a critical level, with 40 states in the US anticipating water shortages by 2024. To counter this issue, some companies have started to think of ways to conserve water.

One company has taken to brewing beer with recycled wastewater. Epic OneWater Brew is a Kölsch-like ale from purified sink, shower, and laundry water. The beer is made under parent company Epic Cleantec, in partnership with Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company.

But how’d they do it? With wastewater from an apartment complex in San Francisco! The complex’s water was fed through a number of “ultrafiltration membranes” and then disinfected with ultraviolet light. It was then tested by a third-party lab to ensure that it meets quality standards established by the federal government for drinking water.

But don’t head out to your local distributor just yet. Due to federal and state law, Epic OneWater Brew is not commercially available, since it’s made from wastewater. But that’s something the folks at Epic Cleantec hope will change.

Would you drink a beer made from recycled wastewater? Reply and let us know!

TODAY’S ADVICE

A jobseeker’s guide to social media

Social networks were once the place for awkward selfies and cringeworthy status updates. Nowadays, though, we do everything there: read the news, sell stuff we don’t need… Even apply to jobs. So, let’s see how you can do the latter right:

✏️ Spruce up your social profiles. Your prospective employer will Google you. Make sure the embarrassing stuff isn’t visible.

Use the “open to work” feature on LinkedIn. This will help you rank higher in recruiters’ searches.

👍 Follow the companies you like. You’ll be able to see their recent job openings and interact with their posts.

🌐 Build your network. Don’t just “connect” with people online; introduce yourself to them. Try to build and maintain connections!

📫 Join job posting groups. Facebook and LinkedIn have groups for jobseekers. Visit them regularly.
