OPINION

(Please don’t) Banish the chairs!

vanishing chair

If you’re active on social media, you may have seen a photo of a chair going around. One with a note on it that reads “Not for employee use”. If you haven’t, the image was originally posted on Reddit with a caption that said: “Walked into work today to find chairs missing. [...] Apparently, this is being done to ‘increase productivity’.”

It’s not uncommon for some positions, like retail jobs, to require workers to stand for extended periods of time. In this case, however, employees were denied the right to sit down during their break time, too. Crazy, right?

What’s even crazier is that employers like this one still exist, thinking this is the way to increase employee productivity. Like the matter hasn’t been studied enough. And like the research hasn’t always shown the same thing: that if you want your team to be efficient, you have to treat them like people.
