OPINION
Ghost jobs: The séance of jobseekers 👻
You find a role that looks like a good fit. You tailor your résumé and cover letter. You apply. You send a follow-up email. You hear nothing back. You wait a few days and send another. You’re met with a symphony of chirping crickets. 🦗 A few weeks later, you notice that the same job is either still available, or has been reposted. What gives?
It’s possible you applied for a “ghost job”. It’s an opening that doesn’t exist. In a 2022 survey of 1k hiring managers, 68 % kept job posts up for more than a month, while 1 in 10 managers had job posts up for more than 6 months — 1 in 5 didn’t plan to hire until 2023, and 50 % kept listings up because “they’re always open to new people”.
The point is that these ghost jobs are intentionally left up. At best, they’re a way for hiring managers to optimize their time. At worst, they mislead the public and shareholders by using jobseekers to create fake statistics on the growth of a company. The issue is that they’re at the expense of the time and dignity of jobseekers, and misleading shareholders is illegal. So let’s put them to rest (for good).

You’re not earning what you’re worth. 💰
The work environment is toxic.
You’re not respected and appreciated.
Your opinions and ideas aren’t valued.

What’s your summer vice?
Guilty pleasures: everybody has them. So let’s just come clean! We’ll go first: we love a good dessert cocktail in the summer, like the mudslide. But when the sun’s out, we can’t seem to resist sugary treats in general. Like s’mores. And creamsicles — and alcoholic slushies.
So, do tell. What’s your weakness?
