⚡ TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: With every passing day, I’m one step closer to achieving my goals.

TALKING POINT

The jobseeker who works for failed companies 👎

failed companies

One anonymous LinkedIn user has gone viral on Twitter for having a prolific record of being axed from companies that had equally prolific downfalls. The story made waves in March 2023, after Trung Phan retweeted the user’s work history with the caption: “Person can’t catch a break.”

Among the companies were WeWork, the inspiration for the Apple TV+ miniseries WeCrashed and the defunct SVB. Their work experience also includes ex-crypto giant FTX, which had a meltdown that shook cryptocurrency, and Theranos whose CEO just began an 11-year prison sentence.

In March 2023, they began a role as a Sr Account Manager at Credit Suisse. That same month the company collapsed and was bought by UBS. Coincidence? The timeline prompted some Twitter users, including Phan, to question the authenticity of the account, assuming it must have been a joke.

Whether real or fake, it’s possibly the first time we’ve seen a résumé-based history lesson on some of the biggest corporate failures since 2010.

TODAY’S ADVICE

Take your résumé from zero to hero 🦸

Received an award, identified and solved an issue, improved a process, saved your company some bucks, or instituted an innovative strategy? Well, these are impressive achievements that you should be shouting from the rooftops. And from your résumé.

So, how do you go about talking about your achievements on your résumé?

  • Include them in your work experience section. List them as separate bullet points.

  • Use actionable language. Starting each bullet point with a power word boosts its impact.

  • Follow the PAR method. Describe the (P)roblem, list the (A)ction you took, and state the (R)esult.

  • Use metrics. Incorporate figures and percentages to quantify your achievements.

  • Prioritize. List your achievements by importance and relevance.

  • Make use of the summary section. For your more prominent achievements, you should place them in your career summary.
