THE BIG IDEA

Making a career out of collecting scholarships

piggy bank winking

Throughout her years in high school and college, Gabriella Carter managed to secure over $ 2m worth of scholarships, allowing her to graduate from Princeton University without any bills. From that experience has come a lucrative career in scholarship consultancy and marketing, earning her over $ 130k in 2022 alone. 💰️

It started when she began sharing tips for securing scholarships on social media. During her senior year in high school, her fellow students began noticing that she was really good at getting awards, and they wanted to know how.

Realizing she could monetize answering those questions, she started posting videos about her experiences applying for scholarships. From there, she started expanding her brand, Growing with Gabby, which alone made her $ 87k last year.

But it wasn’t exactly easy. Carter recounts at one point applying to over 100 scholarships and receiving back-to-back rejection letters from over 30 of them. But with persistence and dedication, she eventually received 35 separate scholarships throughout high school and college, securing herself an essentially complementary education at an Ivy League University and the basis for a successful business. 💪

TODAY’S ADVICE

May I have some feedback, sir? 🥺

Jim Carrey typing

You did it! You found a job that interests you, sent in your résumé, stood out and got invited to interview. Although interviewing itself can be nerve-wracking, the waiting that comes after can be just as agitating.

“Did they like me?” you may start asking yourself. “Did I say the right things? Did they notice the stray cat hair on my blazer?”

Well, you may as well ask the hiring manager directly.

Some tips for asking for feedback after an interview:

🕒 Wait at least 24 hours before calling or emailing. Some candidates don’t ask for feedback until a few weeks have gone by — or until they’ve been turned down. If you don’t want to wait that long, it’s okay to do it earlier. Just not unreasonably early.

🤝 Start by thanking the interviewer. Conducting interviews is time-consuming! So, thank them for their time and for their consideration. Regardless how you express your gratitude, make sure to address the interviewer formally by their name.

🤔 Explain what your email is about. Once you’ve set a positive tone, ask your interviewer what you can improve on. Be specific — for example, inquire into how well you answered a particular set of questions.

Reaching out after the interview has its benefits. If you’re not selected for the job, it can help the recruiter remember you when a more suitable role opens up. It can also give you valuable insights into what employers are looking for, which is handy for future interviews.

QUESTION TIME

Workdays can be looooong

How do you unwind after a long day at work? That’s what we asked you this week, and here’s what you responded:

  • I like to go on walks and focus solely on my surroundings. I try not to engage with thoughts too much, just observe. 🦎

  • Making music 🎸

  • Cuddling my cats. Science says it’s good for us, so that’s good enough for me! 🐈

  • Chasing after and playing with the children. Includes building dens, hide and seek, and relocating 100+ toys to their rightful spots. Good to move after a lot of sitting, I guess! 👶

  • Climbing and doing ballet! Both require concentrating on what you’re doing, which helps to switch from work faster 💪
