Murder, Millennials wrote 🔪

There’s been a lot of talk lately about how Millennials are killing several industries at once. This particular age group, which refers to people born between 1981 and 1996, is showing little interest in certain products and services. These range from casual dining chains and department stores to cable TV and soda. 🥤

Steve Easterbrook, McDonald's global chief brand officer, has gone as far as to brand this generation “promiscuous in their brand loyalty”. Meaning they will not stick around if something better (for their health or their wallet) comes along. But why should they?

It’s a well-known fact that Millennials are earning less than their parents (about 20 % less) despite being more educated — and being severely more weighed down by study bills. 🎓 As a result, many aren’t buying homes or having children — and don’t plan to, either.

And everyone knows that an aging population means trouble for the economy, added pressure on health services, and increased competition for jobs.

So, why is the internet suddenly weeping about diamonds and cereal (millennials are apparently killing cereal) when there are bigger problems looming over our heads?

We’re curious to hear your thoughts. Reply to this email and let us know.

TODAY’S ADVICE

Dress to impress at your next interview 🤵

An important factor in having a successful interview is to feel confident 😎. But confidence isn’t just about how you feel at the moment. It’s also about preparation. Giving yourself enough time to get ready without having to rush and preparing yourself mentally are ways of positioning yourself for awesome things.

Being well-dressed plays a big part in projecting confidence. This means dressing to influence the perceptions others have about you, as well as your perceptions of yourself. This goes beyond the actual items you wear.

These are 4 tips for dressing for an interview:

  1. Do your research. Have a look at what people are wearing on the company’s website, and use this as a guide.

  2. Consider the company culture. If it’s a law firm or office environment, then dress formally. If it’s a construction company or coffee shop ☕, you might receive some weird looks!

  3. Dress for comfort. You might have heard that men should wear a suit and tie 👔 and that women should wear a pencil skirt. But if that’s not your thing, find a way of dressing professionally that also shows your unique style.

  4. Don’t underdress. That being said, don’t show up in sweatpants and a T-shirt! 👕 The company photos might show everyone dressed casually, but that’s not your invitation to do the same! As a rule of thumb: dress one notch up.

WHAT WE’RE LISTENING TO

Navigating the disability employment gap

Around the world, people with disabilities experience an unemployment rate that’s twice that of people without disabilities. In some places, it’s as high as 80 %. Yet, living with a disability doesn’t prevent you from being a valuable employee.

As either employers and coworkers, it’s vital that we challenge our preconceptions. In this TED Talks Daily episode, Tiffany Yu shows the way.

Working parent secrets 🤫

parent working with kid

Every year on June 1st, the UN celebrates the Global Day of Parents. And this got us thinking… Some strange things happen when you go from being a childless employee to one with kids.

For example, you go from dreading your commute to cherishing it as your sole alone time in the day! Or the tediousness of a 9-to-5 job starts to feel like a pleasant break from the full-time work of parenthood.

Can you relate? Has parenthood changed your mindset about work? Reply and let us know.
