TALKING POINT

Skills-based hiring: An end to the professional degree?

skills vs degree meter

Essentially an attempt at recruiting potential candidates based on their skills (as opposed to education or past work experience), skills-based hiring has more recently been adopted as a way for employers to find qualified candidates who have the specific set of skills needed for a role.

It’s also an attempt at removing seemingly arbitrary barriers to employment for otherwise qualified individuals. Foremost among those barriers is a college degree. Toward the end of 2022, LinkedIn reported that 1 in 5 job posts on the platform don’t require one. This number continues to grow year over year.

At the root of the change is a simple numbers game. Companies realize they can expand their talent pool net by tapping into the 70m individuals in the US who are Skilled Through Alternative Routes (STARs). With the average student owing $ 29k to lenders and a 21-year payoff period for a 4-year college degree, it’s also a matter of employee happiness. The greater the borrowing stress, the greater the stress at work.

So the question is: if companies continue dropping degree requirements in favor of alternative experience, what’s left for professional degree programs?

TODAY’S ADVICE

Spoiled for choice: A jobseeker’s dilemma 🤔

You received an email offering you a job. Awesome! But wait. You received a second email for another job. Double awesome!

Aaand you have a decision to make. It might be an easy one, but if it’s not, you’ll find these tips very useful:

Remember why you’re looking. There’s probably a reason you want to leave your current job. Can either of these companies address your needs?

Research both companies. Go through some employee review platforms to gain a better understanding of employee impressions and company culture.

Seek employees’ opinions. Contact them on LinkedIn and ask open-ended questions to make it easier for them to respond.

Put your happiness first. Growth opportunities, compensation and the rest are important. But your personal happiness is what drives your career and even wellbeing. 😊

Reflect on the interview. Was it a positive experience or a negative one? This will tell you a lot about the culture, how employees are treated, and much more.

Consider your long-term goals. A higher salary might seem nice this very moment, but is that what will really matter to you down the line?

Take your time. It’s a big decision, so you should take every minute of the allotted deadline. If a company forces you for an immediate answer, though, consider it a big red flag. 🚩

Finally, trust your gut. It’s rarely wrong.
