Résumé hobbies, sailing mom/blogger, Memorial Day treats, and more…

CareerAddict

Good morning! 🌅 On this Memorial Day, we have:

  • Come sail away: How a young mother plotted a course to prosperity.

  • Hobbies: Think they’ve got no place on a résumé? Think again!

  • Tasty treats: What’s your favorite BBQ food?

💡 QUOTE OF THE DAY: “Heroism doesn’t always happen in a burst of glory. Sometimes small triumphs and large hearts change the course of history.” — Mary Roach, American author

THE BIG IDEA

Makes $ 40k a month, lives on a sailboat ⛵

That’s the dream, right? Well, for this 33-year-old mother, it’s reality. Back in 2011, Michelle Schroeder-Gardner started a personal blog called Making Sense of Cents to track her own journey to getting rid of debt… And it blew up. Big time.

Within a few years, Schroeder-Gardner had wiped out $ 40k in study fees and was even earning enough to quit her 9-to-5 job. She currently lives on a sailboat, travels the world with her husband and daughter, and works as little as 2 hours each day. But there’s a secret to this: compartmentalizing (doing one thing at a time) and automation.

The 33-year-old dedicates a whole day to doing one thing, such as drafting blog posts in advance. This eliminates multitasking and boosts her productivity!

Then she dedicates another day to responding to emails. The newsletters she schedules on a different day direct readers back to her blog, which results in passive earning through her audience looking at ads, affiliate products and her own courses.

Finally, she delegates tasks to people she trusts, like freelancers, her part-time editor and her virtual assistant.

Is this the lifestyle you envision for yourself? Reply to this email and let us know.

TODAY’S ADVICE

Hobbies can make your résumé stand out

For the most part, your hobbies and interests have no place on your résumé — which should focus on your experience, qualifications and achievements.

That said, there are certain scenarios where including them is acceptable, and even encouraged:

  • You have insubstantial work experience and relevant skills

  • The company specifically asks for them

  • The company puts an emphasis on employees’ character traits

If you fall into any one of those groups, then you should consider adding hobbies to your résumé. But there’s a bit of a science to the whole thing, and these quick tips will come in handy:

Be strategic. Choose hobbies and interests that emphasize your skill set and that are relevant to your target job. 🎯

Steer clear of weird and controversial hobbies. Like pole dancing and witchcraft, for example. And even things that reveal your political or religious affiliations.

Create a dedicated section. And put it at the very end of your résumé.

Use bullet points. List each hobby separately. Stick to 5 at most.

Add some background info. Briefly expand on each hobby, explaining how it applies to the role. But keep it to 1–2 lines. ✍️

And finally:

Make sure you have space. If your résumé is going to go over 2 pages, you might as well take your hobbies and interests out.

What’s your favorite Memorial Day BBQ food? ♨️

Burger gif

Everyone loves a good BBQ. The smell and sound of sausages and hamburgers simmering away on the grill (and veggies too)! The sodas. The beers. The snack food. Of course, a good BBQ is about the side dishes too! Whether it’s Aunt Sally’s loaded potato salad or Uncle Bob’s skillet cornbread, you’ve gotta have the plate fillers!

And then of course there’s pie. Mmmm. Pie. 🥧
