OPINION
Overemployment: It’s not just about inflation
Born out of the pandemic-era mass-expansion of remote work and inflation, overemployment answers the cost-of-living crisis by taking on two full-time jobs simultaneously while working the same amount of hours (or less), usually without an employer’s knowledge.
But it’s also about job security.
The overemployed are proud that they phone it in for at least one of their jobs, which shows they’re concerned neither about career longevity nor getting fired.
Is everyone who is overemployed a trained actor, or do recruiters not vet candidates well enough to see if they have even the slightest interest in the company or industry? Or are they looking for someone who’s not motivated by career advancement and simply looking for a steady paycheck?
It’s about not putting all your professional eggs in one corporate basket. In this sense, the overemployed are reacting to the age-old problem of sudden labor force disposability during economic hardship by treating their job(s) as disposable.
Can you really blame them?

TODAY’S ADVICE
What’s your number? 💰
Feel like you’re not being paid what you’re worth? Or are you considering another job offer and want to make sure it’s a fair one?
Well, it’s time to do your homework and research your market value so you can better negotiate your salary.
These are some of the top salary resources out there to do just that:
Bureau of Labor Statistics: Although a difficult site to navigate, it has some of the most comprehensive and up-to-date information available.
PayScale: After answering a few survey questions, you’ll receive a salary report based on your skills, knowledge and experience.
Salary.com: You’ll find worldwide HR-reported compensation data and you can easily customize your search with a variety of filters.
Got the information you need? Keep these quick negotiation tips in mind:
Provide a range, not a specific number. And make sure you’re comfortable with accepting the lower end of your range.
Build your case. Provide concrete examples of how your skills and experience benefit the company. Explain why you deserve that number.
Practice. Using a mirror or enlisting the help of friends and relatives will help you build your confidence and hone your delivery.
Think beyond salary. If the company doesn’t have a big enough budget, consider negotiating on perks and benefits like PTO and gym membership.
