THE BIG IDEA

It’s a-time for a change…

As a young collector, just getting into the secondhand luxury wristwatch market, Austen Chu, a 26-year-old from Hong Kong, was scammed — “many times.”

While others would walk away in defeat, for Chu, this was a sign that the industry needed to be more transparent and inclusive. It was also a sign that the industry’s traditional buy low, sell high business model needed to come to an end.

So, he started Wristcheck, a pre-owned watch trading platform and content publishing house. Wristcheck provides a fixed fee for every transaction (8 % commission from sellers) to prevent sellers from accepting lowball sums at auction houses which charge as they see fit.

Three years after its founding, Wristcheck currently maintains an inventory of over $ 80 million worth of luxury watches — and Chu has enjoyed entrepreneurial success as a brand ambassador and designer for some of the world’s leading watch brands.

TODAY’S ADVICE

Workin’ from home like a baus

working from home with dog

Working from home is terrific: you dodge the daily commute, you bypass workplace distractions, and you can work in your PJs — to name but a few WFH benefits.

But it’s also an art that you need to master. For your own — and your job’s — sake.

These 5 tips are a starting point:

  1. Set and stick to a schedule. Having clear guidelines on when to start and finish work will help you maintain a healthy work–life balance.

  2. Create a dedicated workspace. If you can, find a quiet space in your home to work from. Also, be thoughtful when creating your WFH office setup.

  3. Set boundaries. Discuss your needs for privacy with other members of your household. This is key in maintaining productivity, efficiency and focus.

  4. Schedule breaks. Make sure you use your lunch break for that: lunch. And aim to take a couple of shorter breaks throughout the day.

  5. Take sick days. When you’re unwell, take time off. Don’t force yourself to power yourself through illness because you have the convenience of working from home.
