THE BIG IDEA

The 29-year-old who made a fortune on TikTok

miss excel

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Kat Norton had to stop traveling for her consulting job and move back in with her parents. A few months into working from home, however, she became bored. With the help of a friend, she began brainstorming side hustle ideas… Until she found the right one: creating bite-sized Excel lessons for TikTok.

Kat posted her first video in June 2020. When she posted her fourth, she got 100k views within days! How? All thanks to her “Excel-ent” way of conveying useful advice in a playful manner. Specifically, in that fourth video, she explained Excel’s XLOOKUP feature to DMX’s song “X Gon’ Give It to Ya”.

By October, Kat’s channel had reached 300k followers. That was a good time, she realized, to start creating online courses and selling directly to her audience. And, indeed, it was: just a few months down the line, in February 2021, she was able to quit her job and become a full-time entrepreneur.

In about a year, Kat had surpassed $ 1m in revenue, and even hit an incredible milestone: taking $ 100k in a single day. If you’re wondering what her secret is, her (Excel-non-related) advice includes the following: finding your purpose, prioritizing self-care and letting go of perfectionism.

TODAY’S ADVICE

One résumé to rule them all 👑

Did you know that, on average, a single job vacancy receives 250 applications? That’s 250 résumés that hiring managers need to review to find “The One”.

As the competition is fierce for any job, you need to do everything in your power to stand out from the crowd and make hiring managers go: “Yep! This dude/dudette is the ideal candidate!”

But how do you do that? These quick tips and tricks will help you move your résumé to the top of the pile.

  1. Incorporate important keywords and phrases from the job description. This will help you beat applicant tracking systems.

  2. Tailor your résumé to the company and position. Match the employer’s needs and wants to what you bring to the table.

  3. Use impactful language. This includes starting bullet points with action words, using the active voice and writing in fragments.

  4. Show, don’t just tell. Explain what you achieved rather than simply listing job duties. And make sure to demonstrate results with numbers and metrics.

  5. Pay attention to design and formatting. Use a professional font, use headings for sections, add a splash of color, and aim for an overall uncluttered look.

  6. Be consistent. If you use a specific color for one heading, use the same for the others. Likewise, if you use the Oxford comma once, do it again where needed.
