THE BIG IDEA

You can’t can make money making music! 🎶

guitarist making music

After losing his job in 2009 at the height of the Great Recession, Graham Cochrane looked for a way to monetize his childhood passion for music. So, he started a blog and YouTube channel, and took freelance recording gigs to make ends meet. By the end of 2010, he made a staggering — well actually, he just made $ 7k and had to apply for government assistance.

But as Lenny Kravitz knows: “It Ain’t Over ’Till It’s Over”.

By growing his YouTube channel and music blog, Recording Revolution, Cochrane started to see 6-figure returns: $ 120,000 at the end of 2012, and double that ($ 250,000) at the end of 2013. In 2018, he started his personal brand, teaching individuals to start online businesses.

The result: Cochrane is currently the head of a one-man million-dollar business, currently earning him $ 160k a month — for just 5 hours of work a day.

TODAY’S ADVICE

Strikin’ the right balance between work and life ⚖️

Achieving the ideal work–life balance can be difficult, but it’s something that we must strive to do.

Otherwise, you can say “goodbye” to productivity, efficiency and personal happiness, and “hello” to burnout, coronary heart disease, depression and strained relationships. 😱

So, how can you strike the right balance? These 5 tips will help:

  1. Prioritize your health. Both your physical and your mental health, that is. Make the time for practicing self-care, exercising and eating healthy.

  2. Invest in your relationships. Take the time to make the time for family and friends. Watch a movie together, play a board game or enjoy a night out.

  3. Unplug. When at home, be sure to disconnect from work. This means logging out from your work accounts and keeping your devices switched off.

  4. Learn to say “no”. It can be hard — even uncomfortable — sometimes to say “no” to additional work. But every time that you say “yes”, you’re likely saying “no” to family time.

  5. Stick to your working hours. If your workday ends at 5pm, then be sure to clock out at 5pm. This is especially important if you work remotely or you’re a freelancer.

We all need someone to lean on…

👪 In the Lilo & Stitch scene that made kids and adults cry, Stitch says: “‘Ohana’ means family. Family means nobody gets left behind.”

No matter who we call family (our relatives or former strangers we befriended along the way), our closest relationships are vital to our wellbeing. So much so that close bonds are considered a remedy for the challenges that life throws at us. Stressful jobs, financial instability, toxic workplaces: it’s scientifically proven they all become easier to cope with when we know we have someone to lean on.

So, since it’s International Family Day, how about you reach out to a loved one and let them know you appreciate them?
