THE BIG IDEA

From cardboard signs to riches

this is a sign gif

If you’re a regular social media user, you’ll have seen this guy before. Known online as Dude With Sign, Seth Phillips found worldwide fame doing something unexpected: holding up cardboard signs. So, how did this all begin?

Back in 2019, Phillips and his manager at Jerry Media, Elliot Tebele, came up with the idea of “protesting” in various public places. Except, instead of taking a stance on important matters, their picketing would just address some mildly annoying, everyday thing. Some examples include “$ 1000 phones should not shatter so easily” and “There’s no x in espresso”.

Those first photos of Phillips went viral. As things stand, Dude With Sign has 8m followers on Instagram, including celebrities like Tom Brady, Drew Barrymore and Rihanna. He’s also appeared on The Ellen Show, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and even at the White House.

Collaborations with big brands, like Old Spice, Dunkin’ and Budweiser, kept coming in, too. The result? Phillips, originally from Hawley, Texas (with a population of just under 600 people) is living large in New York. To give you an idea, his apartment is worth $ 6k a month!

What can we take away from this? Phillips has already made an Instagram post with the answer: “Don’t leave your million-dollar idea in your notes app”.

 📝 WEDNESDAY’S TO DO:

Update your résumé ✔️ If you’ve developed another skill set, then let the world know!

TODAY’S ADVICE

Résumé formats: Which suits you best?

The whole point of your résumé is to introduce your qualifications and background to potential employers. They want to know what you’ve done, what you can do and how you can contribute to their company’s accomplishments.

🤔 But how present that information is just as important. And you can do this with one of the three main résumé formats.

So, what are they? And which one should you use?

The chronological résumé places the focus on your work experience and is organized in reverse-chronological order. That means it starts with your most recent position and goes back in time. This format is the most widely recognized and works for virtually every jobseeker, regardless their career situation.

The functional résumé, meanwhile, places the focus on your skills. It begins with a skills summary: a list of 3–6 of your most relevant skills, backed up by evidence of how you used each skill in the past. The functional format is ideal for jobseekers with a spotty work history or with little experience.

Finally, the hybrid résumé places equal focus on both your experience and your skills. It includes a skills summary, followed by a traditional work experience section. This format is recommended for experienced professionals and for career changers.

💡 Ultimately, which format you choose to use depends on your particular career situation and personal preference. That said, recruiters generally prefer the chronological format, as it’s easier to read and they’re more familiar with it. It’s also more ATS-friendly.
