Mass tech layoffs, a career secret, learning other skills, and more...
It’s Taco Tuesday! 🌮 And in this taco-tastic email:
Mass tech layoffs: Is the end really nigh for the industry?
Lifelong learning: The secret to career advancement.
Something special: Aptitude testing to assess your abilities.
✨ TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: I am the best at what I do. I create exceptional results for my organization.
TALKING POINT
Layoffs, shlayoffs: Tech workers are staying put
News of tech layoffs abounds. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, since they have increased by a factor of 649 % percent in 2022. A shrinking US economy, lower demand for tech services compared to the pandemic-era, as well as the crash of Bitcoin have each been linked to the phenomenon.
While this might seem hopeless, it’s worth remembering that the most publicized layoffs often reflect big tech, and not medium-sized companies or those operating outside the tech sector. The demand for tech workers continues to grow.
While no news of layoffs is good news, mass layoffs in big tech may also point to positive room for growth and diversification in the marketplace. As industry giants continue trimming their workforce, smaller companies and those outside of big tech will have a pool of highly-trained candidates to choose from.
What are your thoughts on the future of big tech? Reply and let us know!

TODAY’S ADVICE
The secret to advancing your career 🤫
If you’re not moving forward, you’re just moving backwards. Or, to quote Phoebe Buffay from Friends, “You’re staying still.” Although she says that staying still is good (so she doesn't move in with her boyfriend Gary), staying still in your career is bad. Very bad.
You need to keep moving forward — and up. How? Through lifelong learning.
On top of gaining valuable knowledge that can help you advance your career, you also improve your confidence, boost your mood and keep that beautiful brain of yours sharp.
Below are some quick tips to help you do just that:
Develop another skill. This could be programming, public speaking or even cooking.
Take an online course. Or even go back to university or take a night class.
Learn another language. Some of the most useful include Mandarin, French, German and Spanish.
Read. Set yourself a monthly target (like two books a month) and break it down into a daily habit.
Keep smart company. That genius buddy of yours can help you explore fresh ideas and learning topics.
Download an educational podcast. You can even listen to it while on the go.
